Schmick new look for Oakey Soccer Club

9 June 2015

Oakey Soccer Club is a standout when traveling to competitions around the district thanks to a donation from the New Hope Group to buy new travel shirts.

The donation enabled the purchase of enough travel shirts for all senior and junior players as well as some training equipment for the club.

The volunteer run club facilitates training and competition for members of the community, from the age of three up to seniors, in Oakey and surrounding areas.

Club Secretary Jane Johnston said there are about 60 members at the moment and the shirts have made a huge difference to club morale.

“We play as far afield as Laidley, Toowoomba, Dalby, Highfields and Pittsworth. We have just started a ‘Squirts’ team – three to five year olds – which can be a challenge in away games but these new shirts really stand out at fixtures making it easy to find them in the crowd!

“Seriously though – all the players look smart and professional and that in turn really fosters a sense of pride in the club and the community they’re from.

Apart from providing a sport the club plays a large role in helping integrate a large contingent of Brazilian families that live in the area and breaking down cultural and language barriers.

“They brought with them their passion for soccer and many of them play with our club, with great skill, but have limited experience of the English language and Australian way of life.

“Being a part of the club environment provides them with a welcoming environment which nurtures language development and assimilation into the wider community” she said.

New Acland General Manager Andrew McDonald said the New Hope Group’s giving back to the community through its Community Sponsorship and Donation program is a responsibility, and a privilege.

“The program assists not-for-profit community groups and organisations around the New Acland Coal Mine.

“Through the program we are delighted to contribute more than $600,000 each year to community-based organisations and groups.

“Not-for-profit groups and organisations within the Toowoomba Regional Council area are all eligible to apply for funding assistance” he said.
