New Acland shines in emergency competition

3 October 2012

The impressive skills of the New Acland Emergency Response Team were on full show at the recent 2012 Open Cut Mines Rescue Service State Challenge.

The state titles were held at the Queensland Combined Emergency Services Academy (QCESA) at Whyte Island, at the Port of Brisbane, in late September.

New Acland General Manager Jim Randell said it was the first year New Acland had taken part in the competition.

“Our Emergency Response Team had a tremendous experience and has learnt so much from this competition,” he said.

“This has been a big learning curve for our team and we are really proud of their efforts.”

New Acland was the only team from South East Queensland to compete in the Challenge, with the other teams from Peak Downs Mine, Gregory/Crinum Mine, Callide Mine, Blackwater Mine, Goonyella Riverside Mine, RTCA Bengalla Mine and Saraji Mine.

The teams competed against each other, and the clock, in simulated rescue exercises which included a vertical ropes rescue, multi-casualty exercise, road crash rescue and an exercise involving the use of breathing apparatus.

The intensive two-day event, which included a one hundred question knowledge test, culminated in an awards dinner.

“Of course, we all hope our team members never have to use their special skills, but it’s reassuring to know we have people at our site – and therefore living in the local communities around our site – with these lifesaving skills, Mr Randell said.”

Mr Randell said New Acland’s Emergency Response Team had 23 designated members at the mine site and all of the site’s supervisors also had high levels of emergency incident training.

“The recent grass fire near Acland was an example of how important it can be to have a properly-trained and well-drilled Emergency Response Team on our site.”

“While the decision to send our ERT and our truck was done only after considering the potential needs to control risk at the mine site, it is still comforting to know that these people are in our ranks and are ready here at New Acland,” he said.

Members of the New Acland ERT competing at this year’s State Titles included Stewart Sherrington (Team Manager), Grant McDonald (Manager), Andrew Scouller (Captain), Greg Briggs (2IC), Aaron Titmarsh, Stewart Millis, Brett Jackwitz, Andrew Koehler and Lindsay Bidgood.
